

The Key West Art & Historical Society has been a leader in historic preservation for future generations. Their dedication to the careful restoration of Key West's most historic properties includes the Fort East Martello, Key West Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters, and the Custom House. 
The
Audubon House & Tropical Gardens
offer a relaxing, educational environment for families and visitors of
all ages. Slated for demolition in 1958, the house was saved by the
Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation. The Foundation is a nonprofit
educational institution. This was the first restoration project in Key
West, and is still considered the gem of the island's restoration
movement.

The
National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect and
preserve Key deer and other wildlife resources in the Florida Keys. The
refuge is located in the lower Florida Keys and currently consists of
approximately 9,200 acres of land that includes pine rockland forests,
tropical hardwood hammocks, freshwater wetlands, salt marsh wetlands,
and mangrove forests. These natural communities are critical habitat
for hundreds of endemic and migratory species including 17
federally-listed species such as Key deer, lower Keys marsh rabbit, and
silver rice rat.
A variety of Garry's pencil drawn alligator and bird note cards can be found in the visitor center.

The Structures at Heritage Village: As you walk
through the pine and palmetto landscape, you are really walking through
the museum! The buildings and other features make up the Village�s
largest �artifacts� and are part of the museum�s �collection.� Inside
the buildings, you will find period rooms and displays depicting
lifeways, culture and early industries that shaped the Pinellas
peninsula.
Explore
Historic Florida through a hands on adventure at the Old Florida
Museum. This entertaining "Hands On" museum allows guests to actually
participate in daily living activities from pre-European times to
1900's. Located on the corner of State Road 16 and San Marco Avenue.

Completed in 1887, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station was built when the area was known as Mosquito Inlet. After decades of restoration by the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association, it stands today as one of the best preserved, most complete Light Stations in the nation.


PARKING: Convenient to the Castillo de San Marcos, Colonial Spanish Quarter and famed St. George Street, parking is inexpensive and safe at the Historic District Parking Lot located at the Visitor Information Center.

THE DISCOVERY GLOBE
In an amazing 8 minute presentation visitors are immersed in
total darkness and with the aid of an immense two story globe
and black light, the journeys of the early explorers and other
items of historical importance are mapped out.
THE PLANETARIUM
Visitors embark on a fascinating 15 minute journey through storm
and stars to track the voyage of Ponce de Leon to the New
World and have the stars reset to appear as they appeared
to him on the night before he came ashore in 1513. Lobby exhibits
reference instruments used for celestial navigation and life
aboard a spanish galleon.
TIMUCUA INDIAN EXHIBIT
"First Encounters" details the collision of cultures
when the first Europeans met the native indians. Exhibits and
artifacts trace the relationship of the Spanish Conquistadors
and the Timucua as they adapt to each others customs and differences.

The
Colonial Spanish Quarter is a living history museum. Costumed
interpreters relive a time when St. Augustine was a remote
outpost of the Spanish Empire. The Colonial Spanish Quarter
illustrates the life of Spanish soldiers and their families
in 1740 St. Augustine.
Tradesmen
go about their occupations in blacksmithing, carpentry,
leatherworking, candlemaking and other
trades. The visitor experiences how families lived,
how they grew and cooked their food, and how they tended
their livestock in 18th century St. Augustine
You will experience the sights, sounds and smells of
a town in historic Spanish Florida.

Old St. Augustine Village is situated on an entire city block of history containing a collection of nine historic houses spanning the period 1790 to 1910.
Explore the five exhibit galleries nestled among the buildings'
courtyards and gardens. Included in the 1572 town plan of St.
Augustine, this city block contains an archaeological record of a
sixteenth-century hospital and cemetery, an eighteenth-century Spanish
Colonial defense line, and an early St. Augustine bridge, as identified
by outdoor exhibit markers. The grounds also include the site of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation reading, which freed all slaves in Florida. The Village features the collections of museum benefactor, Kenneth Dow, and exhibits highlight St. Augustine and Florida history. Visit the Star General Store, which offers guests Florida gift items including books by local authors.

The members of the Woman's Exchange of St. Augustine work very hard to
support The Pena Peck House Museum and to give women a venue for
selling their handcrafted products. The members work in the gift shop,
serve as guides for the daily tours of this historic home, cater and
serve parties in the house and garden to secure funds to maintain this
House Museum. Membership in this organization is by invitation. Our
local Exchange is a member of the National Federation of Woman

Strawbery Banke Museum began as a "save our history" effort by the
citizens of Portsmouth . Named
after the earliest Portsmouth settlement, Strawbery Banke Museum, today
on the 9.5 acre museum grounds are buildings from four centuries
displayed as living history. Each building shows a slice of life from a
bygone era, and serious archeological and crafts work continues to be
done by staff and artisans on the museum grounds.

The American Civil War Museum presents the entire story of the Civil War era and the Battle of Gettysburg with remarkable realism. Learn the causes, effects and significant personalities that shaped the Civil War and as a result, ultimately, American history.
Throughout five hallways of scenes, the American Civil War Museum recreates history with life-sized dioramas of the Civil War. Visitors complete a self-guided museum tour that begins with the economical, social, and political causes of the war and ends with the untimely assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Following the self-guided tour, visitors enter into the internationally acclaimed, digitally enhanced Battleroom Auditorium.
The Gettysburg AddressAmidst the sounds of thunderous battle cries and bullets, visitors will witness a life-sized recreation of the Battle of Gettysburg. Discover how a small town in rural Pennsylvania became known for one of the bloodiest battles in American history. An animated Abraham Lincoln delivering the immortal Gettysburg Address follows the battle recreation.

Today at Jamestown Settlement, the story
of the people who founded Jamestown and of the Virginia Indians they
encountered is told through film, gallery exhibits and living history. New gallery exhibits and a new introductory film trace
Jamestown's beginnings in England and the first century of the Virginia
colony and describe the cultures of the Powhatan Indians, Europeans and
Africans who converged in 1600s Virginia. Outdoors, visitors can board
replicas of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607, explore life-size re-creations of the colonists' fort and a Powhatan village, and tour a riverfront discovery area
to learn about European, Powhatan and African economic activities
associated with water. In the outdoor areas, costumed historical
interpreters describe and demonstrate daily life in the early 17th
century.
Yorktown Victory Center indoor exhibition galleries recount the war�s effect on 10 ordinary men
and women who witnessed the Revolutionary War, highlight the roles of
different nationalities in the Siege of Yorktown and explore the story
of the Betsy and other British ships lost in the York River during the
war. Exhibits also describe experiences of ordinary soldiers,
Yorktown�s importance as an 18th-century port and the development of a
new government with the Constitution and Bill of Rights.



Battle of Fredericksburg
The December 13, 1862 battle is known as General Robert E. Lee’s easiest victory. A five- mile driving tour and several walking trails provide access to the key spots on the battlefield.
